The works to repair and improve the road connecting Kigali City and Nyagatare District started last week, where the Road Agency announced that these works will last for a few months.

The regional administration said that this road is one of the most important investments aimed at facilitating trade between the two counties, especially for the agricultural and livestock farmers who need to get their products to the market quickly and efficiently.

The road is more than fifty kilometers long, and in recent years it has had many problems with potholes and soil erosion caused by rain. This resulted in truck trips taking longer than scheduled, and the risk of perishable products such as vegetables and fruits.

A spokesman for the regional highways agency said: “We are working with experienced contractors to ensure that these works are carried out smoothly and on time. We are confident that the road will be completed to the required quality standards.”

Economic agencies have said that these works will help increase trade between the two regions, and increase the number of vehicles that pass through this road every day. Shopkeepers near the road said they expect their business to pick up soon after the work is completed.

Residents living next to the road said they were happy with this project, saying it was long overdue because the road had been in poor condition for a long time, causing them problems during the rainy season. Some of them said that they usually face the problem of travel delays, especially during the volcano’s heavy rains.

Those in charge of this work asked motorists and pedestrians to be careful where the work is done, to avoid accidents during the work. They added that street lights will be installed again in some areas, to help those who travel at night.
