A popular singer in Nigeria, David Adeleke popularly known as Davido, has asked the President of the United States of America Donald Trump and the international community to closely monitor the Osun State Governorship election, scheduled for August 15, 2026.

In a message through the X website on August 11, 2026, Davido said that he is worried that there are reports that there may be violence, threats or actions that could threaten democracy in the elections.

He said: “The people of Osun should be given the right to vote freely, peacefully and without fear. I call on the United States of America and the international community to closely monitor these elections and encourage the institutions responsible for protecting the security of voters and honoring their votes.”

“We don’t want bloodshed. We don’t want terrorism. We want peace, transparency and fair elections,” he continued. He also tagged @realDonaldTrump in his message.

Here is the artist Davido who is the nephew of the Governor of Osun, Ademola Adeleke, who is campaigning to run the state again.

His plea comes after the controversy that followed the decision of Nigeria’s anti-corruption and anti-corruption agency, EFCC, to freeze the accounts of Osun State, saying it suspected corruption.

EFCC said it has seen money being transferred from these accounts to other accounts that are considered questionable since August 2, 2026, and therefore decided to freeze them based on the rules governing this sector.

Tinubu ordered that the accounts be opened

While the controversy was going on, Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered the EFCC to withdraw the decision to freeze the accounts.

In a statement, Tinubu said that although the EFCC has the right to investigate, when it took that decision it made people think that the Federal Government wanted to interfere in the Osun election.

He emphasized that the anti-corruption agencies should do their work independently, but avoid activities that could cause concern during the election.

Lawyers criticize EFCC

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Afam Osigwe, criticized the decision of the EFCC, saying that no body has the authority to freeze the operations of the accounts of all the County governments in general.

He explained that if there is one account suspected of being used for fraud, the EFCC can ask the court to freeze it, but that the closure of all Osun State accounts is an abuse of power and against the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Governor Ademola Adeleke has already sued the EFCC in court, demanding 2 billion naira compensation, accusing it of causing him loss and disrupting the functioning of Osun State.
